Internet users are able to find your site by your domain name, or web address. Put simply, it works like this:

1. Your web server, like all computers connected to the internet, has an IP address (eg. '118.88.23.102')
2. When you buy a domain name (e.g. 'byoweb.com.au') you direct it to the IP address of your web server - a bit like redirecting your mail to a PO Box
3. When a visitor asks for your domain, they are sent to the IP address of the web server, which then points them to your website files. Simple!

You can probably get a free URL from your ISP and have your website located at www.isp.com/members/yourbusiness. However, this will not do good things for your reputation with prospective customers. To put it plainly, those URLs are for personal and kids websites. A domain name is such a small investment (less than $60 per year) that it really has become a must-have for business alongside a registered business name and business card.
